An owl in a pharmacy

Barev everyone! Today we are talking about a very common word we see every day: "pharmacy," which in Armenian is «ԴԵՂԱՏՈՒՆ» (degh-a-tun). It is a compound word: դեղ means medicine, տուն means house, so together it is "house of medicine."

Once, while walking in Arabkir district near the Druzhba metro area, we entered a pharmacy and saw an owl in the middle of the room, or maybe an owl statue. It sat still and mechanically turned its head. We shrugged and left.

A year later we found out the owl was actually alive. It had been hit by a car, and the pharmacy owner, Artur, nursed it back to health, although it lost one wing. Now Lurik, that is the owl’s name, lives in the pharmacy and has become a landmark on Baghramyan Street. The pharmacy itself looks like a magical box with secret doors, but that is another story.
