At the foot of the majestic Cascade stands a monument to Alexander Tamanyan, a great person with a difficult life story. It was he who created Yerevan’s master plan, the plan that shaped the city as we see it today.
During the day, winds from the Ararat Valley dominate. In the evening, a fresh breeze comes down from the mountains in the opposite direction. Tamanyan designed Yerevan’s streets like a one-way aerodynamic valve: heat and dust gradually fill the city during the day, then quickly blow out in the evening.
Now look closely at the inscription on the monument. The letters form the word «ՃԱՐՏԱՐԱՊԵՏ». A rough transliteration is "ch-ar-t-ar-ar-pet." But be careful: the initial "ch" sound is unique to Armenian and hard to pronounce correctly. If you want to master it, it is best to hear it from an Armenian friend or take a couple of lessons.
