Surprise in Nor Arabkir Park
We live in Arabkir district. By local standards, it is considered prestigious, but it is not as expensive as Kentron (the city center). It is also less dusty and cooler, which matters a lot in summer.
When someone from Moscow hears the word "park," they usually imagine large green spaces like Troparevsky Park, Izmailovsky Park, or Neskuchny Garden. In Yerevan, the closest equivalents are the Botanical Garden and the park around the Armenian Genocide Museum. Most other parks are smaller cozy squares, and not every district has them.
Arabkir is lucky in this sense: it has Nor Arabkir Park with a great view of the Hrazdan gorge, a pleasant walking area under conifer trees, and a fountain. Our child’s school is next to the park. We often walk there with friends and their dog.
So, on a warm summer evening, we saw THIS on a park path. The photo is a little blurry because IT was moving quickly. Armenia has many snakes due to its mountain terrain and hot dry climate, including venomous species such as the blunt-nosed viper. We started googling, asking friends, and even showed it to our son’s biology teacher. The verdict: it was a slow worm, a legless lizard, completely harmless to people.
Okay, good to know. But we were definitely scared when a well-fed one-meter reptile hurried across the path right past us.
A lizard photo is attached.
