🌞 Tbilisi. Sulfur Baths

Hi everyone!

We continue the series “where to go in Tbilisi in January.” Today - baths. Tbilisi stands on hot sulfur-water springs. People say baths existed here since the city’s founding in the 5th century, though the current buildings were mostly built in the 18th-19th centuries.

The sulfur-bath district is right in the center of old Tbilisi. Some baths look beautiful even from outside, with incredible mosaics. Pushkin and other famous people were known to visit them. On one of our previous trips, a city guide advised us to visit Bath No. 5: less pompous outside, but very beautiful inside, with the same amazing mosaics. The area around it is green and well maintained.

The place offers shared sections (men’s and women’s). You can also rent a private room with a changing area; it has a cold-water tub and a hot spring-water bath. This time we took a private room for three people with a sauna. One hour costs 120 lari (about 3,500 RUB). They also offer herbal tea served with lemon and sugar in tulip-shaped glasses called “armudu,” common in Turkey and the North Caucasus. Tea with this atmospheric serving costs 20 lari (about 600 RUB).

Definitely recommended. Hot water relaxes the body and lowers cortisol, and sulfur springs in moderate doses are said to be beneficial too.
