Interesting Places in Armenia. Gyumri
🎄 The pre-holiday season is not only about waiting for the celebration, but also about warm memories from the outgoing year. We’re continuing our notes about interesting places in Armenia. 💼 Let’s open the suitcase of memories. Today’s story is about Gyumri - a beautiful and distinctive city about 1.5-2 hours from Yerevan by car, or around 3 hours by train 🚞. There are several train options: express and regular. The express takes about two hours, while the regular train takes about three.
I already mentioned that our Yerevan community grew out of parents of Vlad’s classmates, and we gather quite often. At the beginning of September we decided to go somewhere together, and Gyumri won: it is easy to reach, and the weather is usually great at that time. Yerevan is still summer-like, while Gyumri is usually 4-5 🎄 degrees cooler.
But on that exact day Yerevan suddenly turned cold and rainy. We checked the Gyumri forecast and it was not encouraging at all: +8 and heavy rain for the entire day. I took an umbrella and tried to dress for the weather (in the next episodes of this Gyumri trip story you’ll see why it didn’t help much).
We met near the station in a cheerful, optimistic mood. Many people came light, without umbrellas: “we won’t melt.”
🧚🏽♂️ Any trip starts from an airport or a station, so let’s say a few words about Yerevan railway station.
Yerevan railway station is a vivid example of Soviet monumental modernism with national motifs. The building was constructed in the 1950s; the facade is decorated with arches and bas-reliefs, and its main highlight is the clock tower, which became a recognizable city landmark long ago. Interesting fact: for many decades, long-distance trips across the Caucasus and beyond started exactly here. Now only one international route remains - Tbilisi.
